A macroscale FEM-based approach for selective laser sintering of thermoplastics
2017
A numerical approach to model the selective laser sintering (SLS) of polypropylene is proposed. A 3D thermal model was developed and thus enables the prediction of the temperature fields and the extension of the sintered area in the powder bed taking into account the phase change during multiple laser passes. Powderâliquid, liquidâsolid and solidâliquid phase changes were modelled during the SLS and the subsequent cooling processes. Then, a 3D thermomechanically coupled model was set up based on the temperature results of the thermal model in order to predict the distortion of the produced parts after cooling down. Different pre-heating temperatures were considered, highlighting their…
Convectively driven vortex flows in the Sun
2008
We have discovered small whirlpools in the Sun, with a size similar to the terrestrial hurricanes (<~0.5 Mm). The theory of solar convection predicts them, but they had remained elusive so far. The vortex flows are created at the downdrafts where the plasma returns to the solar interior after cooling down, and we detect them because some magnetic bright points (BPs) follow a logarithmic spiral in their way to be engulfed by a downdraft. Our disk center observations show 0.009 vortexes per Mm^2, with a lifetime of the order of 5 min, and with no preferred sense of rotation. They are not evenly spread out over the surface, but they seem to trace the supergranulation and the mesogranulation. T…
On the effects of the Double-Walled Tubes lay-out on the DEMO WCLL breeding blanket module thermal behavior
2019
Abstract The EU-DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead Breeding Blanket (WCLL BB) concept foresees liquid Pb-15.7Li eutectic alloy as breeder and neutron multiplier, whereas pressurized subcooled water as coolant, with operative conditions typical of the PWR fission reactors (temperature in the range of 295–328 °C and pressure of 15.5 MPa). The cooling down of the BB is guaranteed by means of two separated cooling circuits: the one consisted in square channels housed within the complex of Side Walls and First Wall, and the one composed of a set of Double-Walled Tubes (DWTs) submerged in the Breeding Zone (BZ) and deputed to remove heat power therein generated. A parametric thermal study has been ca…
Assessing Radiation Hardness of SIC MOS Structures
2018
It is widely known that devices based on wide gap semiconductors show potential benefits in terms of saving mass, increasing power densities compared with standard Silicon ones [1]. The higher operating temperatures these components can withstand can also reduce the power budget currently used for cooling down power electronics. These factors are critical in space applications where, for example SiC devices are very promising. However, in this field reliability is a paramount requirement, and radiation conditions can compromise the usage of these new technologies.
